The Andrew Cameron Roth Memorial Scholarship Fund is awarded to the most accomplished Senior Class Cross Country Runner attending Buckhannon-Upshur High School.  The recipient must be college bound.

2007 Andrew Cameron Roth Memorial Scholarship Award

The Andrew Cameron Roth Memorial Scholarship Fund has been exceptionally successful this year due to contributions from our community via collection tins placed at the following establishments: The Bicentennial Inn, Brake’s Dairy King, The Donut Shop, Neka’s Pizzeria, Sam’s Pizza, and Kentucky Fried Chicken.  Special thanks to the patrons of Brake’s Dairy King, who alone contributed well over $200 for the fund, and to Neka’s Pizzeria for a year-round collection tin.  Additional funding was provided by Mountaineer Marts and Papa John’s Pizza.  If you personally contributed to the fund, let me take this opportunity to thank you for your support.

My son, Andrew, was an extraordinary athlete, with his passion for running on the BU Cross Country Team, as well as being an avid cyclist.  As all great runners start their career, he began running as a small child, trying to escape from his Dad and me trying to catch him.  When he was older, there was this one time he was running in the woods a couple of miles from my home, on a hill that most humans would not try to walk up because it is so steep.  He looked down over the bank and saw two bear cubs playing in the bushes.  Then he looked further into the woods and saw Momma Bear barreling down the hill toward him.  Andrew knew the drill.  He turned and ran a quarter-mile before he had the courage to turn around and see if he Momma Bear was on his tail.  When he realized he actually made it to safety, he burst out laughing so hard, the neighbors surely thought he had lost his mind. 

Some of you in this audience may still remember Andrew and his trademark smile that would never end, lighting up the whole room around him.  We were lucky to have such a blessing in our lives for almost twenty years.  It has been nearly two years since his death, and we miss him horribly.  Please take the time to visit his website at www.rememberandrew.com and leave a memory or a message in the forum located there. 

The recipient of this year’s award was privileged to actually know Andrew and to share a few laughs along the way.  The award is given to the most accomplished graduating senior on the BU Cross Country Team who is college bound.  Without further adieu, I present the 2007 Andrew Cameron Roth Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $650 to Amy Lewis.
