Andrew Cameron Roth Memorial Scholarship 2006

The 2006 recipient of the Andrew Cameron Roth Memorial Scholarship received this award May 21, 2006 during the award ceremony at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.  Below is a copy of the presentation:

I am proud to say that I am Andrew Roth’s Mom.  Many of you here tonight remember Andrew and what a special person he was.  It is hard to believe that it has been almost a year since he has been gone.  I want everyone here who knew Andrew to reflect back to the times that he made you laugh and brightened your day with his sweet smile.  His father, Neil Roth, saw Andrew as a force of nature – and he was. 

For those of you who don’t know Andrew, he graduated from Buckhannon Upshur High School in 2004.  He had a passion for running and loved being on their Cross Country Team.  Running completed Andrew, calmed his spirit, and gave him focus.  I spoke with a good friend of his, Jason Ours, the other day.  Jason used to run with him on the team, so he understood what it meant for Andrew to run.  He said the best part of running for Andrew was not the actual running itself, but beating everyone around him.  I guess he really thrived on the competition. 

He was the type of guy who really loved to push himself to the limits.  I remember taking Andrew on 20 mile bike rides when he was 8 years old.  I know this sounds extreme to some of you, but believe me, … he loved it.  I could go on for hours about how much Andrew means to me and those who knew him.  This just touches the surface of who Andrew is, but there isn’t enough time for that now. 

There is a website I want you to visit in Andrew’s honor.  It is easy to remember this one.  Rememberandrew.com  It has lots of great pictures and a forum with stories and poems about Andrew. 

The Andrew Cameron Roth Memorial Scholarship was formed to help everyone remember Andrew and his outstanding athletic ability.  I would like to thank all of you in our community who contributed to this fund and made this scholarship a reality.  It is the least we could do in his honor.  It is awarded to the most accomplished graduating senior on the cross country team who is college bound. 

The recipient this year has been described to me as a really special person who will be attending college this fall.  Although it has no bearing on selecting a recipient, it is my honor to present the scholarship this year to someone who actually knew Andrew and just may have found him an inspiration to succeed in their own endeavors. 

In the amount of $275 and without any further adieu, the Andrew Cameron Roth Memorial Scholarship recipient is

Katie Bush.
